Masterclasses with Christine Benson

“Where each new venture is a new beginning,
articulated in cloth, stitch, colour and texture.”

Master class is a course in embroidery and design, a unique personal journey in stitched textiles, with the emphasis placed on extending strengths and helping to overcome weak or problem areas.

Students have the opportunity to develop their own skills and style, through building a portfolio of ideas and concepts; sketchbooks or journals; explore and experiment with stitched samples to achieve finished works of art.

The focus is on each individual and their personal approach to interpreting an emotive response to their chosen subject matter.

With guaranteed maximum input through one-to-one tuition, and discussion.

This course is suited to those who have gained a City & Guilds qualification or similar, however qualifications are not an essential prerequisite, but you should have a serious wish to extend and progress your own work to a more proficient standard.

Workshop Programme at The Old School Rooms, Congresbury, Somerset

Oct 2nd - From Fabulous Fibres to Fantastic Fabric
Turn fantastic silk fibres into unique and fabulous fabrics. Explore each fibre’s quality and potential to create fabrics that are a delight in their own right or inspirational surfaces for further embellishment.
Oct. 30th - Fragile Fragments of Time & Place
Use places that are special to you as your inspirational starting point. Fragments of time are portrayed through architecture or artefact; while the essence of the source is captured through fragile layers of fibre, fabric and thread to create an abstract study in hand and machine stitch.
Nov 20th - A Box of Delights
Construct a small box that will be an absolute treasure, using silk fibres and rich embellishment. This will make an ideal gift – if you can bring yourself to give it away!
Dec 18th - Precious Parcels
Pack, wrap and contain precious natural items, pebbles, stones, seed heads, and shells – in fragile formations influenced by the oriental tradition of beautiful presentation.
These parcels will be constructed of natural fibres; flax, linen, silk, kozo, papers, wires and hand stitching. As with eastern art forms these may be presented as individual pieces or placed in a group for a sculptural effect.
Jan 22nd - Versatile Vessels and Containers for Tea!
Explore the possibilities of using luxurious silk fibres in a three dimensional manner. Incorporate fine wires and embellish with machine embroidery to create forms that are fanciful, fun and far from functional.
Feb 12th - An Absence of Colour
Think tone, texture, tactile!
Explore the possibilities of kozo combined with silk and other fibres; hand stitched threads and wires to create 2D and 3D fragile surfaces that intrigue and inspire. Natural materials in natural colours result in sumptuous subtle surfaces.
Mar12th - It’s Not Written in Stone
Starting from an Egyptian inspirational source.
Produce a small artefact from machine embroidery, soluble fabric, silk fibres, and metals.
May 21st - The Rubbish Renaissance
Some packaging is just too lovely to be discarded, create a really stylish surface that will be a conversation piece.
Jun 11th - The Elizabethan Element
From this inspirational ere, create a small bag with a gloriously rich surface, using silks, sheers and pearls. Some Elizabethan stitches will be used.
Jul 9th - More Elizabethan Elements
Another day using this inspirational era, to create encrusted and enriched surfaces.
The cost of each workshop is £38
Some materials are available at extra cost
